Sometimes the best surprises come from the most unexpected sources. (Please excuse the cliché.) Without a doubt, the Exxon station at the corner of Mills Gap and Sweeten Creek Roads houses the best smelling convenience store in town. Inside this unassuming Exxon station with a Thai restaurant roped off in one corner: Pon’s Thai.
While South Asheville, and Asheville at large, has a lot of excellent Thai options, from Tamarind to Baan, Pon’s certainly has the strangest atmosphere yet some of the best local offerings. If you choose to dine in, the atmosphere is a conversation piece: The charmingly set up tables overlook the rest of the convenience store, with its aisles of candy, motor oil, and energy drinks.
When it comes to Thai, the food really is the thing, and Pon’s does not disappoint. The flavors are bright and very distinct, and the vegetables are fresh and crisp. Chef and co-owner Pon Wyatt is friendly and enthusiastic, and she and her team create magic in their very clean kitchen, which is visible from most angles of the convenience store. The majority of orders are brought to the counter by Pon herself.
Available for lunch and dinner, the prices are on the lower side compared to other Thai restaurants in town, but the quality of the food is visibly high and the portions are generous. Pon’s only web presence is its Facebook page, on which the menu is presented over the course of a few posts.
In Asheville, we have a wonderful, delicious reality: There is a lot of good Thai food, and, good for us 28803 and 28704 folks, quite a lot of it is in South Asheville. The next time you’re in the vicinity of the humble hidden treasure that is Pon’s, check it out.
